Most of them are about the nuances of love and loss, and how they resonate with images of nature. The poems are precise, emotionally laden without being goopy, and often surprising coming from a young woman of the early part of the 20th century. The first, "My Heart, Being Hungry", is a small gem, and with a few exceptions it gets better from there. The closing series of sonnets, which tell the tale of a farmwife whose unloved husband dies in his bed, is heartbreaking in its sense of love, ambiguity and "what now?"
