As the new crew chief for Maximus Racing, Tobey Harris is under a mountain of pressure. He's sacrificed nearly everything for this opportunity. But when he finds himself working with attractive publicist Amy Barber, Tobey's pressure gauge starts hitting the danger zone.... Amy isn't looking for romance. For the first time, she's representing one of NASCAR's top drivers, and she's not willing to risk her fledgling career for anyone...especially not someone she works with! But can Amy and Tobey keep their relationship strictly professional--especially when they're just inches from crossing the fine line between business and pleasure? I really liked Amy, who is trying to juggle her career with raising her fourteen-year-old sister (who can be quite antagonistic at times) and caring for her aging great-aunt. The character of Amy is nice and likable, and she doesn't come off as a jerk, unlike many romance novel characters. The choices she makes are reasonable.
I also liked Tobey, the fresh-faced crew chief who is trying to prove himself. His backstory is a little unnecessary (it seems like everyone has a tragic story in romance novels), but it was okay. And the sparks between him and Amy were great. I found myself laughing several times while reading this novel.
The secondary characters are also interesting. The NASCAR imprint is its own little world, so characters that were featured in other books are mentioned or play roles in the book. It's nice for the die-hard fans who have read every book in the series, but those who are new to the series won't really feel left out, either.
My only real complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed, but whatever. It was a fun ride. ( )
