Aimed at kids a little older than the usual alphabet crowd, still a quaint book about American sports history. ( )

This book is an alphabet book like you would get for primary students. It is aimed for the intermediate group though. It goes through the alphabet and each letter represents an amazing moment in sports history. For example, the letter "s" stands for two swimmers that earned medals in the Olympic games. The moments described in this book are all of the moments that you think of when you think about sports.
I first read this to a group of learning disabled children. They were having difficulties learning their letters and placement of the letters in the alphabet so we were reading alphabet books. One of the students in particular was a sports fanatic. We read this one to capture his interest. Some of the concepts required explanation because the book is aimed at a higher reading level, but overall, the kids really enjoyed it.
In the classroom, I would read this aloud with the class. I would probably read it along with several other examples of alphabet books. After reading the books I would have the children write a book about the amazing moments in their lives. Each letter would get a rhyming sentence to describe the even. Then the children could either illustrate it themselves or they could cut out pictures from a magazine to illustrate the event. ( )
