Matt Doeden’s book The Greatest Hockey Records provides a history of the sport of hockey, famous hockey players, and the hockey statistical records at the transitional reading level. The book is highly structured, including a table of contents, four thematic chapters, lists of books and websites for further reading, and an index. Despite this structure, Doeden neither cites his information nor provides a bibliography of sources. While there are an astounding number of facts in this book, the amount of text per page is kept to a minimum; the majority of each spread is filled instead with photos of famous players and moments in games and a text box of “greatest” lists such as “Most Career Goals” and “Longest Overtimes in NHL History.” The text itself is generally narrative in nature, intelligently giving readers an interesting story to fit with the statistics they see. The formatting of the book which involves purple patterned background, multi-colored boxes around labels, and image edges that appear to be scratched out, is a little overwhelming. This book is highly recommended for both public and grade school libraries, but purchasers should beware letting it get too out-of-date on the shelf! ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
