This is a cool book for kids who show in interest in sketching. After kids have read about the history of the first US Thanksgiving, they can look at the step-by-step sketching guides in the back to draw pictures of Pilgrims, Natives, and much more! ( )

I love a book which engages a child, and this story of the first Thanksgiving does just that. We are told the simple story of the Mayflower voyage, hardships and Indians. We learn of young John Billington, who wandered too far gathering berries. We learn of the cooperation of Indians like Squanto and Massasoit. And, finally, of the great feast itself. The pages are illustrated with lovely watercolors.

My favorite part of the book comes after the story. The final nine pages are a dedicated how-to-draw lesson which lets children (an other budding artists) draw their own pilgrim and Indian characters. My sons were both engaged, at their own levels, in making Thanksgiving posters using the ideas in the book. And that is why this is one of my favorite Thanksgiving books. ( )
