For a book listed under the horror genre, the plot in this story wasn't at all frightening. I found the dripping blood in the haunted house cliche and some of the other 'scary' moments absurd. While Bryan and his new friends attempt to solve the mystery of the Dark Man and the disappearance of the town's children, the story lacked the spine chilling factor it had the potential to have. However, having said that it is still an okay read. E.E. Richardson's debut novel, Devil's Footsteps, is a SUPER SCARY horror / mystery novel! And boy...is it spine-chilling! However spooky and unique the plot may be, the actual writing in the story is somewhat "average." First of all, the characters were not as well-developed as they could have been. I didn't feel for them, and I didn't feel that they had personalities - just characteristics and stereotypes. They had no real emotions, just hints of feelings. As a reader, I found it hard to continue reading because I just simply didn't connect with the characters. I have a lot of mixed emotions on the plot. Before I even say anything else or begin critiquing / praising the plot, let me just say this: Devil's Footsteps has some serious scary moments! This book is just beyond creepy! Ugh! **Shudders** Bravo E.E. Richardson for totally creeping me out! The plot is also quite original and creative. This is a very unique horror story, and I quite enjoyed it's creepiness! There isn't another story quite like it! However, the pace of the book is quite slow. This bothered me, as it felt as if I was reading a 300 page book verses the actual 180-paged story. This left me quite unsatisfied. All in all, this story is sincerely creepy and I highly recommend it to lovers of horror stories - specifically fans of [b:The Old Willis Place|439092|The Old Willis Place|Mary Downing Hahn|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347262660s/439092.jpg|427937] and [b:The Hunt for the Seventh|2973943|The Hunt for the Seventh|Christine Morton-Shaw|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348811444s/2973943.jpg|3004262].
