SOCIOLOGY is truly a classic introductory text which introduces students to the methods and theories of sociology using Rodney Stark's hallmark "Over the Shoulder of a professional sociologist" approach, presenting sociology on a personal level. Stark describes what sociologists do and how they do it, focusing first on the questions they pose and how they search for and formulate their answers, and then moving on to study their answers and conclusions. In this way, he effectively explores themes, raising issues in a straightforward manner with historical accuracy and solid research. The text employs a unique feature titled "A Closer View," which illustrates seminal research studies to introduce students to the sociological imagination and the world around them. "Stratification in agrarian societies arose from the ability of the elite to monopolize military capabilities." [240] So he begins the chapter on the relationship of the stirrup and feudal domination. Immense inequalities developed as an unexpected consequence of a very small technical innovation. In 733, Charles Martel led the Frankish host against the invading Saracens. At the Battle of Tours, the Franks routed the armies of Islam. Their stirrups enabled their knights to smash a lance into a target with the full force of a galloping horse. This also ended the importance of farmer-soldiers in Frankish military operations. It began the breeding of large horses, retinues of servants, years of training. Frankish society was transformed. A king could not support more than a few knights. But if a knight was given title to land and authority to tax peasants, they could support even more knights. Feudalism was born. [243] Charlemagne emerges in 806 and unifies much of Europe.
Naming. The Old Testament contains chapters of names - the begattings. In the outback of Australia, tribes were found who would conduct the following ritual with intense interest: Spokespersons would pass back and forth to discuss ancestry, closely examining family trees. For only if mutual relative show up can the groups be friends. If the bands are strangers, there is nothing to do but fight or flee. [244] I can see this in the House of Judah/ Arabia.
Luddites. English textile workers smashed machines in a series of riots 1811-1816. Their legendary leader was Ned Ludd. [505] Unions were illegal, workers were reluctant to kill their lords, and did not want to destroy factories because they needed jobs. Wars against Napoleon and the United States caused food prices to soar while wages dropped dramatically because of a loss of markets for textiles. The Luddites needed higher wages, but the employers had no reason to pay them. So they smashed machines.
This is a spell-binding work on a fascinating subject: human beings.
