Daly calls this volume a “public syllabus,” a fitting description for the twenty-two articles collected here. Without claiming to be exhaustive, the book articulates a range of feminisms (as well as womanist and mujerista perspectives) and a range of ethics that provides an excellent introduction to the discipline of social ethics. Because both editor and authors name themselves with care, their work is instructive for ethics that would attend to social location, embodiment, and practice—a refreshing corrective to “masculinist” ethicists who have not named themselves and assumed a universal perspective. The collection is divided into methodological, critical, and “practical” sections. That an especially moving and personal exchange between Katie Cannon and Carter Heyward is included in the “methodological” section highlights the extent to which “theoretical” and “practical” concerns interpenetrate, as do the “methodological” insights in applications such as those by Beverly Harrison and Karen Lebacqz. This is an invaluable resource for anyone concerned with ethical reflection and action, an exceptionally successful public “syllabus” that is equally appropriate inside and outside the classroom.
