This is a mildly entertaining book - very hit or miss for me. Some sections were genuinely funny, but much of it felt like filler; then, there was a fair amount of profanity, including God's name used disrespectfully. Also, some very unnecessary sexual references/humor.

Because this book was published so long ago (1995), there are several cultural references I just didn't get (I was born in 1989), but I did enjoy the mention of the Ernest movies - that brought me back. :)

(As a total aside, it seems this was published before DeGeneres came out as gay, because all of the relationship topics were heterosexual in nature. I just found this interesting; it didn't affect my rating/review.) ( )

Ellen Degeneris was born on January 26, 1958 in Metaire, Louisiana. I read this book many years ago, around 1993, when I was about 29 years old. It had me and my daughter CRACKING UP!!! I wouldn't mind finding another used copy at Goodwill and re-reading just to see if it will still have me rolling on the floor. I'm a lot older now...55. I can't remember what had me laughing so hard. ( )

This is just a book with ramblings by Ellen. Some of it was funny, but, really, just ramblings. ( )

this is really bad. i think that this is written to be more like her standup, and so maybe if she was doing the jokes on stage they'd land better? i think that's true because i feel like some of these sound familiar, so she must have used them later. but written this way, they really aren't funny. they're predictable and repetitive and just not good. there are a couple of moments where she makes a surprising, and therefore more humorous, choice, but they are rare. (same with quality writing.)

this book is old and i do wonder about how hiding her life from people, and hiding who she was, affected her comedy and her ability to connect with an audience. i would bet her stuff from after she came out is better. ( )
