Barbara Hambly is an excellent writer who has written better books, but clearly this one must have been written as a fun vacation for her, between all the backgrounding of old Silent Film Hollywood, the garish and pulpy tone suitable for the goings-on of its Hollywood Babylon world, amid the layered plot surrounding a Chinatown occult horror that must be isolated and stopped. i read it for fun, and it worked for me. Really atmospheric writing, with a very methodical pace. Nothing earth-shattering, but an interesting read. ( )

A light, entertainingly pulpy fantasy set in 1920s Hollywood, where a British war widow tries to help her movie star sister-in-law from the clutches of an ancient demonic force. The characters were likeable and the Hollywood setting quite evocative, but the pacing is a bit too slow and I clearly do not find Pekingese dogs as intrinsically interesting as does the author. ( )

A young woman from England has been whisked away from a life of drudgery by her sister-in-law who is a star of Hollywood. She is still a companion, and somewhat of a maidservant, but also a friend of her employer. Just as she is beginning to wake up to the possibilities of life after the war, bizarre things begin to happen around the two women. Not just Hollywood bizarre, either. We are talking eastern mystical very strange things which imperil their lives.
This went pretty slow for me the first half of the book. However, I liked or was interested in the characters and setting to keep reading. When the action picked up it was easy to keep reading until the end. A solid three star rating for me, which means I enjoyed the read and would probably read another by this author, but probably won't read this one again. ( )

Is it fiction or fantasy? Not sure where to put this one. Set in 1920's Hollywood, where a silent picture star, Chrysande Flammande and her sister-in-law Nora get tangled up in the occult when her boyfriend gives her a necklace as a gift, making her the Bride of the Rat God. The Rat God demands a sacrifice and Chrysande/Christine is it! I really liked the 'campy' feel of this, as it is set in the early days of Hollywood and the great cast of characters. The author did a great job making this feel authentic. ( )

Dedicated, with all my love, to Whiskey, Smudge, Nicholas, and the Eternally Beautiful Kismet, without whose love and company it would never even have occurred to me to write this book.
