I work in health and safety so find the subject matter enthralling . But don’t let that put you off! If you have even the slightest passing (loop) interest in trains, safety, social history or engineering then read this. Yes it was written in the 50s but this is still a relevant and comprehensive book on the subject. ( ) Very much a classic history, indeed. Rolt, a master at describing Victorian technology, goes through the various kinds of railroad disasters of the early (and not so early) decades of railroading, breaking them into logical categories and explaining not only what went wrong, but how technology was developed to try to beat these problems. Only one minor problem with this book, in that in a few spots the editing is sloppy and typos have crept in. Otherwise, strongly recommended. Another book by one of the premier chroniclers of Victorian industrialism, canal-traveling, railroads, and industrial archaeology. This one focuses specifically, as the title notes, on railway disasters, and Rolt does a good job of grouping the incidents together by type, and explaining what went wrong in each incident, drawing heavily on contemporary reports. This, along with his fluid and engaging style, makes this a good (if gruesome) read. Recommended. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Wikipedia en inglés (69)Railway disasters are almost always the result of human fallibility - a single mistake by an engine-driver, guard or signalman, or some lack of communication between them - and it is in the short distance between the trivial error and its terrible consequence that the drama of the railway accident lies.First published in 1955, and the result of Rolt's careful investigation and study of the verbatim reports and findings by H. M. Inspectorate of Railways, this book was the first work to record the history of railway disasters, and it remains the classic account. It covers every major accident on British railways between 1840 and 1957 which resulted in a change in railway working practice, and reveals the evolution of safety devices and methods which came to make the British railway carriage one of the safest modes of transport in the world.
