Colditz high security camp contained every presistent escaper, trouble maker and valuable hostage captured by the Germans in World War II. It was considered escape proof but the very opposite proved to be true. The prisoners pooled their collected talents to create the greatest escape academy of the war. Well researched, well written, and my personal interest comes from a past friendship in Switzerland with a woman, Jane Cabot (also a cousin of Sandy Rotival) who married one of the escapees in 1943 after his escape to Switzerland in 1942 from Colditz. ( )

A wonderful review, not definitive, but if you want that information, there is a series of excellent appendices. It did give a very good overview & narrative over the course of the war & what happened to the inmates throughout. Very moving, especially towards the end. A very good overall summary & highly readable ( )

One of two volumes I own on the Colditz story which is a fascinating tale of ingenuity, courage, and perseverance in the face of incredible odds. Photos of some of the escapers and their disguises is an amazing addition. ( )
