It was supposed to be simple. In Lora Leigh's Wild Card, all Navy SEAL Nathan Malone had to do was rescue three young girls from a Colombia drug cartel, then allow himself to be captured just long enough to draw out a government spy. That was before his mission went disastrously wrong...and before his wife, Bella, was told that Nathan was never coming home.
Bella's mourned her husband's death for three long years. But she has no idea he's still alive. Forced to assume a new identity, the man Nathan was is now dead. If he can get back to his wife, can he keep the secret of who he really is...even as desire threatens to consume them? And as danger threatens to tear Bella from Nathan's arms once more?

Wild Card
4 Stars

Captured and subjected to horrendous abuse by members of a Columbian drug cartel, Nathan Malone is believed dead by his beloved wife, Bella. Following his rescue, Nathan decides against coming back from the dead, assumes a new identity and takes up a position with a covert operations unit. But when danger begins stalking his wife, Nathan aka Noah Blake goes undercover to protect her. However, will their renewed desire for one another place them at even greater risk?

Series note: This is book #1 in the Elite Ops series, which is a spin-off of Tempting SEALs and the storyline is a direct continuation of events in the first series.

As to be expected from Lora Leigh's erotic romances, the sex in Wild Card is scorching hot, but this time the story is pretty good too.

Noah and Bella’s initial relationship before Nathan’s “death” was sweet, but barely touched the surface of their true personalities and it seems that they were both holding back. Now, years later, they have suffered lost and anguish, and have grown as individuals capable of revealing who they really are to one another, which makes their emotional and physical connection stronger and more intense. With this romance, Leigh demonstrates a deeper insight into human nature that is missing in many of her other books.

Leigh often touches on darker issues in her stories and this is no exception. The suspense plot revolves around a group of racist, white supremacists hunting illegal immigrants for sport and believe you me, they are a truly despicable bunch.

In sum, Wild Card is one of Leigh better book, but readers expecting a sweet and simple romance are bound to be disappointed as Noah is dark, angst ridden and possessive, and Bella can more than hold her own against him. ( )

I'd give this book 3.75. Great story but just can't make it to a 4 due to the repetitious sex scenes. ( )
