Ghalib (1797-1869), nobleman, wit, poet and litterateur, was the last great literary figure produced by Mughal India. The papers in this volume present aspects of the man, the poet and his age as they appear through the eyes of eminent scholars. The aim is to make Ghalib accessible to that large audience which is aware of his greatness but can approach him only through the medium of English. So any book on Ghalib's _shakhsiat_ is very welcome.
The book explores Ghalib's work and his times in 5 parts: his letters, his relations with the British, the (tragic) time in which he lived in Delhi, his Persian poetry, and his Urdu poetry.
The authors clearly prefer to view Ghalib as a humanist, but dive deep in to his theological works as well, some of which were a revelation for me.
It's a compilation of papers, so reads somewhat disjointed and without a theme and purpose.
Besides the last chapter, there was a fair bit of new insight and information for me. ( )
