May provides helpful context for the various commentaries included. It is this context that really makes the book a seminar-in-a-box (complete with all the raw materials for some solid essay questions). First hand participants (Kennan, Nitze, Acheson, etc) offer after-the-fact thoughts on the significance of the document. May also provides a primer on historiography, offering examples of traditional, revisionist, post-revisionist and post-postrevisionist interpretations of NSC-68. Some outside perspectives are also offered, included a foreign Soviet expert on American foreign policy.
