I like this informative text. The main idea is to inform the reader about the silkworms. This includes different types, life cycles, and anatomy. I like the author’s style of writing. The text is organized well so that the information flows without being overwhelming. The pictures correlate directly to the text, but more so then that, they have helpful captions. The captions go a step further then the regular chunks of text providing very vivid and description such as “other moths are protected only by hard shells as they change into adults” and “most of the pupae raised on silk farms are killed and their cocoons used for silk thread.” I also liked the pictures. I have known some informational texts to use illustrations but this particular author chose to use pictures from real life to actually show the reader what is being discussed. The photographs make the text so much more relevant to the reader because they can see for themselves what is being described. If a reader is having a hard time understanding, for example, what a pupa looks like compared to a moth, they can see for themselves visually on the same page. It provides more than one way to learn the information, which I really like. ( )
