The protagonist and every decision she makes is a disaster. Somehow the tone remains relatively light and despite the worse and worse things get for her - it somehow still remains an engaging read. I didn't have much hope through the novel that Bennington would turn her life around - it isn't a book so much about hoping as coping (non-intended rhyme). She doesn't have much in the respect of good adult role models and her life suffers pretty outrageously because of that. I don't usually read books like this - but I felt this was a really compelling one despite the raw and explicit subject matter. Belle's style of writing has a lot to do with that. An implausible plot populated by cardboard people, this could have been really well done if the neuroses of the first person narrator had taken clearer shape (I'm thinking about how well that is done in books like "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time"). The novel had three relatively disconnected arcs: call girl, brothel worker, and girlfriend with a secret. If Belle had brought real life to any one of those, it would have been a really good book.
It was 50 Shade of Grey without the sex meets Nick Hornby without the potential for a movie version. (
