National Bestseller “A funny, sad, nasty little gem of a novel.”—Jay McInerney In bestselling author Jennifer Belle’s debut novel, Going Down, Belle introduces readers to Bennington Bloom, a coed working her way through college. As a call girl. With a sharp eye for satire and a keen comic sense, Belle chronicles nineteen-year-old Bennington’s high-pressure adventures. Stuck with an ulcer, a father who loves his dog like a daughter, a shrink who is hard of hearing, and New York University tuition to worry about, she's working overtime to keep it all together and doing what she can to survive. Spending the night in an abandoned hotel pool, punching pushy old women on the subway, Bennington is at an all-time low, and things are only going down from there. A witty take on making it in the city, Going Down showcases Jennifer Belle’s unerring gift for capturing the absurdities of day-to-day life. Funny and intelligent with an endearingly skewed take on life, Belle is the real thing.… (más)

I'm embarrassed to say I read the whole thing. If I hadn't been stuck on a trans-Atlantic flight I never would have finished it.

An implausible plot populated by cardboard people, this could have been really well done if the neuroses of the first person narrator had taken clearer shape (I'm thinking about how well that is done in books like "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time"). The novel had three relatively disconnected arcs: call girl, brothel worker, and girlfriend with a secret. If Belle had brought real life to any one of those, it would have been a really good book.

It was 50 Shade of Grey without the sex meets Nick Hornby without the potential for a movie version. ( )

There is a quote from Jay McInerney on the back of this book that says that it is a "sad nasty little gem of a book" or something close to that anyway.

I really couldn't put it better than that. This book should be totally depressing. The protagonist and every decision she makes is a disaster. Somehow the tone remains relatively light and despite the worse and worse things get for her - it somehow still remains an engaging read.

I didn't have much hope through the novel that Bennington would turn her life around - it isn't a book so much about hoping as coping (non-intended rhyme). She doesn't have much in the respect of good adult role models and her life suffers pretty outrageously because of that.

I don't usually read books like this - but I felt this was a really compelling one despite the raw and explicit subject matter. ( )

One of my favorite things to do in my downtime is to peruse the shelves of my friends on Goodreads. That's how I made the decision to order this one off of Bookmooch. Most of the books that I mooch are titles that I'm not convinced that I want to spend the cash on. Thanks to the mixed reviews that I read online - Going Down fell into that category.

After the first few pages, it became apparent why there were so many varying reviews. This story is very polarizing - you either love it or hate it. Belle's style of writing has a lot to do with that. While the first-person narrative is not quite in the stream-of-consciousness style, it does give the reader the feeling of being in the head of someone with ADD...

Mildly Amusing read about a college girl's slid into prostitution.... ( )

I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did - I mean, how original could a bestseller about a New York call girl be? However, the writing is refreshingly vivid with a sense of pure honesty next to the grittiness. The story takes place over one year as we follow Bennington, a 19-year old acting student, through her experiences with creepy johns, her dealings with messed-up divorced parents and their new spouses, her corky friendships and eventually her quest for a real love affair. Lots of dark humor, mental instability, and heart break peppered with stereotypical images of New York and its inhabitants. An interesting read for a debut novel. ( )
