Fluid account of the history of one of the most notorious political organizations in American history, the Tweed Ring of the 1860s and 1870s that ran New York City. Generally pretty good, though the insistence by the author on calling the Boss William "Marcy" Tweed, instead of the proper William Magear Tweed, is something of an embarrassment. There's nothing particularly new or startling in the book, though the sources are pretty decent. Generally recommended. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
“Professor Callow's book is exciting history. Somehow he sympathetically enters the lives of the dramatis personae heralded by the Times as the `ring.' And he brings these `gentlemen' to life with all the skill of Admiral Morrison....This remarkably lucid and entertaining account of a muddled era of New York history is indeed a significant contribution to political history--in a lively style.”– Library Journal No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
