This is a wonderfully written story of the life of Prophet Mohammad and the revelation that he received on Mount Hira from the angel Gabriel to be God’s messenger. From the first night in the cave when Mohammad began to receive verses that would become the Qu’ran to his creation of the five pillars of Islam, the reader follows Mohammad on his journey from birth, youth, adulthood, to his passing.

The illustrations in the book are outstanding. Each picture is centered across the majority of two pages and is bordered by an exquisite arabesque pattern. The colors are vibrant and mesmerizing. There are ornaments of shiny gold and silver; for example the prophet is always depicted as a gold figure. We see only his shape in the form of a baby, a boy, or a man, and we don’t see any defining features.

I really enjoyed reading this book about the birth of Islam, both for its story and its beautiful images. ( )

Muhammad by Demi is an easily understood and well illustrated introduction to the story of Islam and the prophet Muhammad.

I used this book in my classroom as an example of a children's picture book that explained a world religion. (The students were each assigned a religion native to India for which they will create a children's picture book.) We examined the story line, illustrations, flow, terminology, and sentence structure to get a sense of what needed to be addressed in their assignment. I felt that this book was a good example in that it provided information but did not seem corrosive in anyway nor did it lack a fundamental explanation of the religion.

Additionally, this book contains a good bibliography which was a great example for my students. ( )

Demi illustrates the biography of the prophet of Islam using a two dimensional gold leaf motif. Includes several quotes from the suras.

This book is a really great introduction to Islam and Muhammad's impact on religion and the creation of the Koran and Five Pillars of Islam. Muhammad believed that everyone should be treated equally regardless of class, sex and race. He lead the prophets: Abraham, Moses and Jesus.

A truely unique experience to see the illustrations and read about the life of Mohammad. "In keeping with Islamic tradtion, the Propher Muhammad and his family have not been depicted in this book," following the the commandment, "Thous shalt not create graven images." Mohammad is shown as a golden flat shape, like a celestial being. Beautiful ( )

Ages 7-11

Born in Mecca in 570 A.D., Muhammad lost both his parents at an early age and was raised by a grandfather and then by an uncle, who trained him as a businessman. Always thoughtful, honest, and sincere, he was often called upon by friends and neighbors to settle disputes. He was 40 years old when he received his first revelation from Allah, who called upon Muhammad to recite His words. These words were recorded as the Koran and became the foundation of the Islamic faith. Demi uses the intricate style of Persian miniatures with gold-leaf overlay to illustrate this respectful picture book biography of the man known throughout the Islamic world as The Prophet.
