What a wonderful picture book about the early life of Eleanor Roosevelt. ( )

This biography of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt tells the story of her privileged childhood. Even though she was raised around wealth, she often felt lonely growing up and did not relate to many people around her. She was often misunderstood. It wasn't until she moved to England to attend a boarding school that she found someone who inspired her. Mlle. Souvestre. taught her to think highly of herself and others and they traveled all around Europe together. ( )

Barbara Cooney pens the the story of Elanor Roosevelt before she was a Roosevelt. As a young girl Elanor endured a great deal of hardships. Though she was privileged on the outside her private life was difficult and unstable. She overcame many obstacles to become the First Lady of the United States.
This text taught me a great deal about Elanor Roosevelt. I enjoyed the focus on her early life which was presented by the author. In fact it is only mentioned in a few paragraph excerpt at the back of the book that she eventually was the first Lady of the United States. I think it is such an interesting idea not to focus on the portion of her life which is not looked at very often. I enjoyed learning things which I did not know about a person I thought I knew a great deal about. ( )
