In this installment of the Fairacre series, Miss Read retires from teaching. She then must cope with two suitors, demands to assist with committees, and substitute teaching. This is a nice book, a good story, no violence, profanity, or sexual encounters. The village folks do have their issues and problems, and Miss Read eloquently discusses the pending demise of village life as it has been for hundreds of years. This is one of my fave series, rereading it again.

A perfect wrap-up for this series. The loose ends are even comfortable. The story arc was satisfying, the characters believable and real, the environs welcoming and sweet. I've really enjoyed my sojourn at Fairacre, but I'm also glad to be finished. ( )

Despite the fact that Miss Read never fails to delight me, this book was rather bittersweet for me knowing it is the last one she will publish.

All of the old familiar characters are around to 'help' Miss Read enjoy her retirement. What they most succeed in doing however is keeping her so busy she can't enjoy it! Ever the diplomat, Miss Read manages to have her own way without causing any hard feelings. ( )
