Lili is so quiet, her teacher marks her absent because her voice is too soft to hear. A classmate Cassidy takes advantage of Lili's quietness, picking her for a partner to take credit for her work and "share" lunches. But when a sub takes Mrs. Backmeyer's place for a day, Cassidy gets out of control and threatens the class guinea pig, Lois, and Lili finally speaks up loud enough for everyone to hear. Cassidy backs off and Lili earns the friendship of Rita B., who had been taking care of Lois.

Lili is extremely quite and shy. She spends most of her time with the class guinea pig, Lois. There is a girl, Rita B. who takes care of Lois's needs and Lili would like to do the same. One day, the teacher tells them to choose partners and a bossy girl named Cassidy chooses Lili. She takes credit for all of the work that Lili does and even takes her cake at lunch time, knowing that Lili will not do anything about it. When the teacher is out with laryngitis, and the substitute is not in the room, Cassidy decides to torment the guinea pig. Lili is not having it and she yells so loudly at Cassius that she shocks the whole classroom. She and Rtia B. protect Lois and become friends and partners in the classroom.

Lili is really shy. She doesn't have any friends at school. When a girl tells her they are going to be partners, she picks all the fun things to do and eat, and leaves Lili with the the leftovers. When the other girl starts misbehaving, Lili has had enough, and stands up for herself. In the end, Lili does make a friend. She has learned self-confidence and self-esteem. She has learned to recognize her her own values and express her emotions in a socially acceptable way.
