Fantasy. Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. Science Fiction. It all starts with a school essay. When twelve-year-old Gratuity ("Tip") Tucci is assigned to write five pages on "The True Meaning of Smekday" for the National Time Capsule contest, she's not sure where to begin. When her mom started telling everyone about the messages aliens were sending through a mole on the back of her neck? Maybe on Christmas Eve, when huge, bizarre spaceships descended on the Earth and the aliens - called Boov - abducted her mother? Or when the Boov declared Earth a colony, renamed it "Smekland" (in honor of glorious Captain Smek), and forced all Americans to relocate to Florida via rocketpod? In any case, Gratuity's story is much, much bigger than the assignment. It involves her unlikely friendship with a renegade Boov mechanic named J.Lo.; a futile journey south to find Gratuity's mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom; a cross-country road trip in a hovercar called Slushious; and an outrageous plan to save the Earth from yet another alien invasion.… (más)

Much to the chagrin of Jeff, I can't stop doing a Boov voice. It's so funny. Give an Odyssey Award to that Boov voice! Done!

The True Meaning of Smekday is a hilarious sci-fi adventure, an object lesson about the perils of intergalactic imperialism, a super great audiobook, and probably just a little bit too long. I mean, I liked it a lot, but I thought it could've (should've) been a smidge shorter.

Still, a lovable renegade alien named J.Lo.? Heck yeah. ( )

Now I can see the movie "Home." The audio version of this book was great. ( )

The Boov are hilarious. And a cat is a good pet to have.

Updated because I just listened to the audio book version of it, which was amazing. The Boov are descibed as sounding like a combination of a sheep and bubble wrap and the reader, Bahni Turpin, actually managed to capture that in a convincing and earworm-like way. Maaaaaa! *smack* ( )

Well, that was pretty cute. I listened to it primarily on audio, but made sure to check out Adam Rex's illustrations in the hard copy as I went along. I've also begun to narrate my daily life in the manner of JLo's voice.

This is pretty great and would be fun for both children and adults to read or listen to together. It's wonderfully goofy and the adults will likely appreciate the satire and allegory of the plot and characters. I had to raise my eyebrow (metaphorically speaking...I can't actually raise just one eyebrow) for the scenes with the Chief, wondering if Debbie Reese would approve, and there were plot holes that made me wonder, though I'm much more forgiving when it comes to children's books than adult books for an advanced sci fi plot. Mostly it was just a good time. The scenes between Tip and JLo exclusively were my favorite. ( )
