Valentine Mice is about a group of four mice who go out of their way to deliver valentines to the forest. In the forest they deliver valentines to other animals like a moose, the squirrels, a bunny, and some beavers. In the process, they lose a mouse, but then they find him buried in the snow. The illustrations are very vibrant and upbeat. There aren’t a lot of words in the story, so this could be a useful book for children to read through the language experience approach (Leeland, Lewison, & Harste, 2013, p. 50). The children can read the story and then retell it to someone in their own words, because the book is simple enough to follow. Could be recommended for a Valentine’s Day book in the classroom, or at home. ( )

This is a fun book to share with young readers (preschool-first grade would probably be best), even if it only touches on Valentine's Day slightly. There's a lot of energy on every page, with illustrations of the feisty mice and short, quick sentences that come at a rapid pace. Many of these simply use a single verb - throw, hop, slide, glide - so that you can turn the reading of this book into a movement activity as well, provided that you have an audience of children who can listen well enough to know when to stop wiggling and return to the text. Even if you don't do that, the energy of the book is bound to come up as you read the text in an excited voice, making this a good book for those less attentive listeners. ( )

This is a very quick read and a great way to share the message of Valentine's day with four or five year olds. The mice bring Valentines to everyone in the neighborhood. ( )

This book is a good example of fantasy because mice do not really make Valentines and give them out to their animal friends. The artwork in this book looks like it was done with watercolor and ink. One of the elements of style that I noticed several times in this book was onomatopoeia. Some examples of this were the words, "swoosh", "plop", "zip", and "nip".

This is a short and simple rhyming book. The mice are delivering valentines, and one goes missing. They pull the missing mouse out, and everyone hugs. ( )
