Agoak is a well-educated Inuit who secures a good job at a bank and marries his childhood sweetheart, Judith. Agoak has large career ambitions and contemplates moving to a major city in the South -- Montreal or Toronto. Judith places more value on the traditional Inuit lifestyle and wants to stay in Frobisher Bay. This causes some tension in their relationship, but they manage to work things out and everything seems to be going fine.
Until a brutal event takes places that causes Agoak and Judith to flee and live off the land in the traditional, nomadic style of th eir ancestors. Once on the lam, Agoak becomes increasingly violent and mad.
The dialogue is a bit stilted in the early part of the novel, but the second half is much more dramatic and chilling as Judith and Agoak struggle to survive physically and emotionally. ( )
