CAN YOU TOP THAT? is a predictable book about counting because we can guess what is coming next. This book is also multicultural because it is from a colored boys view which is different from my own culture. Overall this book is about chalk drawings that top what was drawn previously to their drawings. Some examples of this is a fish with one fin, a mouse with two tails, or a snake with three tongues. The illustrations in this book are very exaggerated and colorful to enhance the use of chalk and the children's imaginations. Overall I like how this book uses exaggeration of coloring side walk pictures into learning how to count. I would use this book for a preschool classroom to see if they could guess what is coming next as well as let them color their own project to see what they could come up with for the next picture. Each child describes a wilder a crazier animal they have at home: a fish with one fin, a mouse with two tails, and so on. The count from one to ten is repeated backwards, offering reinforcement. Moreover, the book uses urban language that makes it accessible and creates cadence through it's repetition: "A ___ with ___--I got a __ with __! Can you top that?" Extremely colorful illustrations! Each picture shows a range of diversity in the children. The kids are playing sports and the atmosphere is fun and energetic! Great book to pay attention to detail, recite, remember, and be silly creative.
