This little volume serves two constituencies: the Pym reader who must confront the massive “churchiness” of her work and finds it mystifying, and the church-accustomed reader, who finds this topic fascinating. If you are still one of those who has yet to encounter Miss Pym, start with one! The novels of Barbara Pym are known for their gentle satire, acute observations and subtle humor, especially her portrayal of the clerical world. For fans of her novels, this new collection of essays is a must, of course. For those not yet familiar, these diverse studies of Pym’s social distinctions, London churches, literary criticism and more will be the perfect introduction to her world. Pym's work has a quiet, subtle, ironic quality. This book is essential reading for Pym fans. A happy dipping book for fans.

Not sure why the cover is illustrated with a picture of what looks like a cathedral - one type of church which Pym conspicuously didn't frequent, or mention in her books. A London church or a rural country churchyard would have been more appropriate. ( )
