Bernie is extremely unlucky at gambling and he owes the Shangri-La casino's mob bos Shelly Kaplow over $100,000. He is so unlucky that he is hired as a "cooler". He gambles next to high rollers and gives them some of his bad luck to stop them from winning. This arrangement works out for awhile, but when Bernie has almost paid off his debt, he meets cocktail waitress, Natalie. The two start to fall in love and Bernie's luck begins to change. Всю жизнь Берни не везло. Причем до такой степени, что одно из казино Лас-Вегаса наняло его работать "тормозом", распространяющим свою "ауру неудачника" на самых везучих клиентов. А так как Берни задолжал казино огромную сумму, он прикован к нему крепче, чем стальными цепями. Знакомство с "приносящей удачу" официанткой Натали перерастает в роман и избавляет его от рокового невезения. Почти выплатив свой долг, Берни собирается покинуть Лас-Вегас вместе с возлюбленной. Но управляющий казино Шелли и его хозяева из мафии не собираются расставаться с таким ценным кадром...
