Though this story falls into the category of traditional tales, it touches on religion because it is similar to the popular Christian legend of Noah's Ark. I think this is a great story for young children because it demonstrates that there is overlap between diverse cultures. Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Spring 2002) In this well-researched retelling, based on an indigenous legend from Venezuela, Kaputano the Sky Dweller warns the Kariña people that the earth will be destroyed in a flood. Only four couples heed the warning, and after days enduring the cataclysm, Kaputano creates a new paradise for the survivors. The rhythmic text is pared to its essentials. The stunning illustrations are notable for their strength and manipulation of line. Category: Nonfiction-Folktales and Nursery Rhymes. 2001, Groundwood, 40pp, $15.95. Ages 5 to 9. Rating: 2: Superior, well above average. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Long ago, in the land of the Kariña, the Sky Chief warned his people that a great rain would fall and cover the earth, but the people did not believe him. Only four warriors heeded the prophecy, and together they built a great canoe, filled with animals and seeds from every plant. Surviving the great rains, they had to create their world anew.
