Sentimental and decidedly pro-Southern, this work still does a decent job of hitting the main aspects of the battle, probably the last out and out Confederate victory. The business of the VMI cadets is doubtless recorded here all out of proportion to its actual importance, but that's a minor quibble. The work as a whole is also not for the general reader. It begins rather abruptly with only a cursory review of events leading up to the battle and ends equally abruptly with only a very short discussion of what happened after the campaign. ( ) A great little book about an interesting and important battle of the Civil War. The battle which kept Union forces out of the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 gets a thorough going over by Davis, a veteran historian of the Civil War. The smallish size of the action allows a close up view at both sides. The appendices in the back are quite useful, with a great Order of Battle. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
