Discover New York City should actually be titled Discover Central & Lower Manhattan. Manhattan north of Central Park rates three pages – the Cloisters, Columbia, and Harlem in three pages. Brooklyn gets seven pages, and Queens rates two pages. And several of these pages are taken up by maps. The only mention of anything in the Bronx is Yankee Stadium; even the Bronx Zoo doesn’t make the cut. The Staten Island ferry is recommended, but the assumption is that you won’t get off the boat at that desert isle. Not a single sight or restaurant in that borough is mentioned. No day trips – not to Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, or Jersey – are described. This book must have been written by white Manhattanites!
The areas that are covered contain sufficient food and drink recommendations for anyone. All the tourist spots, and some less well-known museums, are adequately covered. (Make sure you notice the admissions charges, as some of these border on the astronomical.)
There are only a few pages of accommodations listed, but these are well chosen and cover a wide price range. You’ll probably want to do further research on apartments, hostels, etc. Be warned, though, that cheap hotels in NYC usually are dirty hotels.
While Manhattan certainly is not the violent hellhole that it is often portrayed as, it is more violent than comparable cities - London, Tokyo, even LA. This is skimmed over in usual Pollyanna guidebook style. Be careful out there! People should also be warned about the constant presence of low level scams. (There’s not much orange juice in that ‘fresh-squeezed juice’ being sold on the corner.)
This is an adequate guidebook for people who know where they are staying in Manhattan and what they want to see. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to find plenty of information if you wish to journey into darkest Harlem or Staten Island. ( )
