Philosophy. Self-Improvement. Nonfiction. HTML:

The secret to productivity isn't discipline. It's joy.
We think that productivity is all about hard work. That the road to success is lined with endless frustration and toil. But what if there's another way?
Dr Ali Abdaal – the world's most-followed productivity expert – has uncovered an easier and happier path to success. Drawing on decades of psychological research, he has found that the secret to productivity and success isn't grind – it's feeling good. If you can make your work feel good, then productivity takes care of itself.
In this revolutionary book, Ali reveals how the science of feel-good productivity can transform your life. He introduces the three hidden 'energisers' that underpin enjoyable productivity, the three 'blockers' we must overcome to beat procrastination, and the three 'sustainers' that prevent burnout and help us achieve lasting fulfillment. He recounts the inspiring stories of founders, Olympians, and Nobel-winning scientists who embody the principles of Feel-Good Productivity. And he introduces the simple, actionable changes that you can use to achieve more and live better, starting today.
Armed with Ali's insights, you won't just accomplish more. You'll feel happier and more fulfilled along the way.

This dude read all the books that everyone else reads and then wrote a book about it like it was brand new because he's like smarter than you or something. Referencing atomic habits in an even shorter book is underwhelming. ( )

This book could be great for someone who starts to explore the productivity field - putting more focus on fulfillment and quality of life rather than getting more stuff done in a unit of time. However, for people interested in this subject and reading up in the last 10 years or so, it might not offer anything new or original.

The author deals mostly with psychological aspects of productivity, with the assumption that we do our best when we fell good. He provides some interesting reframings and reflections that can be used to restart the "productivity engine" when someone loses steam, a couple of good tips on procrastination, and an important chapter on burn-out prevention. Nothing revolutionary, nothing bad either - a nice summary of the last decade of popular psychology books.

It surprises me how often the author discounts "traditional" productivity advice focused around discipline, willpower, and optimization. This is what helped him to go through medical school/training and build his youtuber brand after all. I'm not sure if he would be in the privileged position to choose what and how he will engage in if he had not worked "discipline muscle" first - it seems that relying only on "feel good" productivity could have not get him there.

No systems, hacks, and optimizations here - only psychological judo with yourself to find meaning and pleasure in what you do. It will be easier to implement if you have any choice in this matter, otherwise it might just add to the frustration.

Nothing ground-breaking or truly original here, but pulls a lot of strands together into a coherent whole. Especially good on causes and potential solutions to procrastination. ( )

Was expecting it to be a little more PKM-based, but it wasn't. Take the title for what it is. The summaries at the end of each chapter are all you really need. ( )
