Even 42 years after the Falklands War, a number of those who served during Operation Corporate feel that the Royal Navy did not promote sufficiently its achievements Down South in 1982. Indeed, some of us feel that the successes were played down, in part perhaps owing to the Royal Navy's innate modesty and its not wishing to crow about itself and, in part, so as not to annoy those RN and RM who were not able, or were not selected, to take part in the operation itself; there was, it seems, a reticence to make the most of the Naval Case as it might seem to be done so as to diminish, in some way, parts of the British Army and the Royal Air Force.

That this leaflet was published by the Director of Naval Warfare (DNW) and not by the Director of Public Relations (Navy) is, perhaps, telling. The leaflet's conclusion is brilliant:

These are just some of the successes: more will emerge from the final analysis but there is no reason why they should not be broadcast now. Use these facts to refute the carping critics and lose no opportunity to promote and defence the Navy’s case.

Perhaps, even in July 1982, DNW could sense which way the wind was blowing and decided to do his best to try to alter course. ( )
