I'm pretty annoyed that over half of this volume is given over to two multi-chapter flashback side stories. Meanwhile the main story continues into the next volume on a cliffhanger, which would have been totally unnecessary without the detours. The first side story is about playing blackjack, which is sort of interesting, but it stars a character whose fate is known, killing any tension in the story. The second side story is just torture porn that follows a young woman through a grueling obstacle course of sorts. The last page is pretty awesome though. The main story, such as it is, has Arisu and a group of his allies taking on the first challenge of the next stage of the games, facing off against the King of Clubs and the "citizens" of Borderland. The discussion of strategy drags on too long, and there is too much running around and despairing without purpose. This is the first disappointing volume in the series, and I'm hoping it is an anamoly. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

"Eighteen-year-old Ryohei Arisu is sick of his life. School sucks, his love life is a joke, and his future weighs on him like impending doom. As he struggles to exist in a world that can't be bothered with him, Ryohei feels like everything would be better if he were anywhere else. When a strange fireworks show transports him and his friends to a parallel world, Ryohei thinks all his wishes have come true. But this new world isn't an empty paradise, it's a vicious game. And the only way to survive is to play. Arisu and his companions have managed to defeat the Dealers, but the battle isn't over yet. Now they must take on the Face Cards--12 players who have the dubious honor of being Borderland "royalty." Arisu hopes they are close to going home, but the games the Face Cards play might be worse than any of the cruelties the Dealers came up with."-- No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

There's a little part of me that questions whether I want to keep reading this series? I'll probably at least read the next one, but with each consecutive installment I've felt significantly less interested and like the quality of the narrative is slipping. For example, certain aspects remain strong: the "main" game and the creative/wild situations the players find themselves in; the overall question of who/what is behind Borderland; seeing who makes it out alive.
But then other aspects just have spiraled: Arisu reads like one giant edgelord and has become almost unbearable to read (Usagi is getting pretty annoying, too); random side characters are introduced and then killed or given meandering backstories that fail to eke out reader sympathy for them; and some characters have literally just been doing the same thing for the past 5 volumes (looking at you, Chishiya) and we don't know any more about them than we did at the start. Like why did we have to read that entire boring-ass poker game scene with Chishiya?? It added nothing to the narrative.
Basically, I want to know what happens but I'm not excited to read the books much. If this was a completed series I'd honestly just read a detailed Wikipedia summary or watch a YT video spoiling the whole thing and call it a day. ( )
