A powerful story of corruption and greed on an epic scale and what happens to the lives of those few brave souls that choose fight it. I am ever so glad The Justos were able to publish this important work. I wish them both all the best. Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing. Very interesting read on how a family's life gets turned upside down after they blow the whistle on one of the largest financial scandals. The husbandwife combo of authors was a very interesting concept, where Xavier writes one chapter from his perspective on certain events and the next chapter is written by Laura which covers her perspective of the experience. There is a whole lot of frustration that is transferred to the reader, and they did a great job in engaging you in their challenges to clear their name and reunite as a family. One part that irked me was the lavish lifestyle they lived working for this criminal organization but at the same time, tried to show that they were suffering. (travelling the world, fancy cars, owned a resort, multiple properties, etc) and also the horrible timing they seemed to put themselves in (getting involved with con-artists, staying in Thailand, going back to KL, lending money they needed themselves, etc). Overall a good overview of the whole 1MDB scandal that caused an international scandal. I am hoping that those involved will receive the punishment they deserve, and I wish the Justo family all the best in their quest for justice and going back to living a normal life. I received this book from the Early-reviewers on Librarything.com Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing. This book details the struggles the husband and wife went through after he became a whisteblower of the 1MDB billions of dollars scandal. He spent over a year in a Thai prison and although he is home now the struggles continue.Overwhelming story. At times I did get a little confused, had to go back and reread some parts. Overall though a very intersting book. Esta reseña ha sido escrita por los Primeros Reseñadores de LibraryThing. I've always had a fascination with corruption and economic crime, to the extent that instead of reading this book, I should have been writing my dissertation for my MSc in Economic Crime. This is really a really interesting story. Initially I was less than impressed with the authors as the job Xavier Justo took with PetroSaudi had so many red flags but then I realised a) I'm a judgemental cow and b) I have hindsight.
The authors went through an incredibly hard time. Imprisoned unjustly in miserable conditions separated from his wife and child for whistleblowing one of the biggest financial scandals ever, Xavier Justo had to survive. On the other hand Laura Justo had the more difficult task of a) working out what was going on and b) finding a way of combatting it. All this while looking after their wee boy and trying to support Xavier. She's the real hero of the story.
I'm glad I read this book. At times it wasn't the most beautiful prose but it felt real. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
