Nikhil and his mom are such great characters and the backdrop of child star doing audio work is unique and very interesting. I love the relationships with grandparents and how that situation plays out. I loved the friendship dramas and how most of the awkward bits stem from caring about each other and trying to find ways to express it. The rally was amazing -- love that the school admin was fully onboard with creating an inclusive school and that the community rallied to reject attacks from outside. Full of heart, full of support in tough times, full of love. ( ) i really loved this. it's my sweet spot in so many ways - discovering identity, cultural awareness, supportive community standing up to bigots, amateur theater - so it's no wonder that i liked it so much. but it's also well written, sweetly chaste, friendship-centered, diverse, and just so lovely. maybe it'll even help me when my own son's voice starts to change in a year or so. "'...even though you should always be proud of who you are, sometimes there will be people who try to make you feel bad about the very things that make you special.'" children's middlegrade fiction - Indian-American 13 y.o. voice actor (who happens to be gay) moves (temporarily) from Los Angeles to his grandparents' home in small-town Ohio, makes new friends, overcomes stage fright in school theater, mends relations with criticizing grandpa (Nana), and stands up for himself and his friends when homophobic parents protest his starring in the 8th grade musical. Lots of heart and good vibes; another great story from Maulik Pancholy. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

"From the acclaimed actor and Stonewall Honor-winning author of The Best at It, Maulik Pancholy, comes a new middle grade novel about a gay Indian American boy who learns the power of using his voice. Thirteen-year-old Nikhil Shah is the beloved voice actor for Raj Reddy on the hit animated series Raj Reddy in Outer Space. But being a star on TV doesn't mean you have everything figured out behind the scenes. . . . When his mom temporarily moves them to the small town in Ohio where she grew up to take care of Nikhil's sick grandfather, Nikhil feels as out of orbit as his character. Nikhil's fame lands him the lead in the school musical, but he's terrified that everyone will realize he's a fraud once they find out he can't sing. And when a group of conservative parents start to protest, making it clear they're not happy with an openly gay TV star being in the starring role, Nikhil feels like his life would be easier if only he could be Raj Reddy full-time. Then Nikhil wakes up one morning and hears a crack in his voice, which means his job playing Raj will have to come to an end. Life on earth is way more complicated than life on television. And some mysteries--like new friendships or a sick grandparent or finding the courage to speak out about what's right--don't wrap up neatly between commercial breaks." -- No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
