This did have some cliches in it, but they still worked for the story. I was very engaged with this story, and it kept my interest. I wanted to keep reading to know what happened and how the story ended. I did kind of guess the storyline and what would or could happen by the time I was halfway through, but I had to keep reading to see if I was right and there were a few slight surprises. This is about Lisette who wants and has always wanted nothing more than to be the Jester at the Royal Court for the Queen, but her father was charged with killing the king and he was executed so that overshadows her and she has to carry it with her. She competes in the competition to hopefully win and become the Jester and finds that she only really has one person who's a serious competitor. The handsome Luc that frustrates and makes her so mad is her only competition - I bet you can't guess what happens with Lisette and Luc in the story lol. As the story follows her and Luc and interactions with her friends through the competition for Jester, we find out some interesting things and Lisette becomes a favorite of the Queen after one of her performances. But Lisette discovers some information after she decides to work with Luc to discover who killed the King that could save and redeem her family's name so she has to decide what to do and see if she can figure it all out to have her fame and redeem her family's name too. This was a fantastic story that I thoroughly enjoyed and wished I could read more of it. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't yet. Thanks so much to Edelweiss and CamCat Books for letting me read and review this awesome read. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Instantly I was drawn into this story. Lisette is the perfect protagonist. Because she is not "perfect" it makes her very relatable. To the point that we the readers are cheering for Lisette to succeed. While Luc may be Lisette's adversary, he is still a likable character. What I also liked a lot about this book is the world that the author built for the story. It was like a mini movie playing in my head while I was reading this book. As I got a really good idea of the world as well as what every character looked like. As the story progressed, I got more drawn into it. Readers who like fantasy books will want to pick up this one. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
What happens in Oasis, stays in Oasis. Lisette's father killed the King. His execution leaves Lisette alone, disgraced, and without the magic he intended to pass on to her. In Oasis, that's a problem. Glutted with enchanted performers, Oasis is a sin city where courtiers pay in gold to drink, gamble, and above all, be entertained. To survive on its competitive streets, Lisette peddles paltry illusions in place of magic. Desperate to prove herself, Lisette enters into a deadly competition to be chosen as the highest-ranked magician in the world, the Queen's Jester. But her rival, the irritatingly handsome Luc, possesses the one thing Lisette does not--real magic. Lisette will do anything to win, but when evidence implicating the Queen in her husband's murder surfaces, Lisette must choose between redeeming her family name, or seizing the fame she's hungered for her entire life.
