"Detective Anjelica Henley confronts a series of ritualistic murders in this heart-pounding thriller about race, power and the corrupt institutions that threaten us. When Detective Anjelica Henley is called to investigate the murder of a popular preacher in his own church, she discovers a second victim, tortured and tied to a bed in an upstairs room. He is alive, but barely, and his body shows signs of a dark religious ritual. With a revolving list of suspects and the media spotlight firmly on her, Henley is left with more questions than answers as she attempts to untangle both crimes. But when another body appears, the case takes on a new urgency. Unless she can apprehend the killer, the next victim may just be Henley herself. Drawing on her experiences as a criminal attorney, Nadine Matheson deftly explores issues of race, class and justice through an action-packed story that will hold you captive until the last terrifying page"--… (más)

Fantastic police procedure that doesnÛªt follow the same ol‰Ûª mold. Picking up where The Jigsaw Man ended, I found it really authentic that a lot of the characters were struggling with PTSD and traumatic experiences. The investigation was interesting and although I guessed some parts, other reveals were quite intriguing. Definitely a series I‰Ûªd recommend!

I also appreciated that nothing seemed overly far-fetched, which is something I find problematic in a lot of criminal investigation shows/novels.
(Like the detective goes ‰ÛÏoff book‰Û or doesn‰Ûªt follow proper protocol and never deals with the repercussions. Or the crimes/solutions are just so off-the-wall that it seems unlikely like one detective would have such a high probability of getting all these unique and bizarre cases. ) ( )

Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley is back on the job and battling an angry widow. Personally, she's dealing with her ambivalence about motherhood and a second child. An engrossing read that will keep you guessing! While this is the second book about Henley, it can be read as a standalone. Strong police procedural with compelling characters.

Thanks to Harlequin Publishing for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley. ( )

I like how twisty this police procedural was, just when you think you have it figured out, surprise, you do not! I love that the officers are dealing (in their own ways) with the aftermath of the attacks that took place in The Jigsaw Man and the effects aren't being ignored or hidden away. I love that Nadine has her characters talk about real life issues like PTSD, infidelity, etc. while focusing on solving the crimes, it makes the characters real. Looking forward to book #3 in the Inspector Anjelica Henley series expected to be published summer 2023. ( )

Anjelica Henley is on a new case where a pastor is found dead, and a young man is left barely alive. As she tries to unravel this case, she finds that people are fanatical and are performing exorcisms. Anjelica is also conflicted about her role as a police investigator vs. being a wife and mother.
As always, Matheson's characters are complex, and this novel continued to make you wonder who was the actual killer, as there were so many possibilities!
Looking forward to book 3! ( )

This was the first book that I read by this author and it will not be my last. There were twists and turns all the way through this book. There was a lot of psychological suspense and some murders. I wish I had read the first book in the series because then I would have understood the main characters a little better. This kept me on the edge of my seat throughout much of the story.. I hope to learn more about Henley and the rest of her team in the next book of the series. I received a copy of this book from harlequin for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
