It's an excellent classic murder mystery set in the 1920's English countryside. Mr. Quayle is the star of a good cast of characters. Well-plotted, with a surprise at the end as to the identity of the killer. The slightly saucy tone fits well with a breezy style. Recommended. ( ) I listed to this while walking and the reader did an excellent job of making all the characters distinctive. Fanny 18th birthday party turns into a murder investigation when a body in found on the ground the the Lord's castle. Lots of suspects and snooty attitudes towards the police from the aristocracy. Hercule Poirot would've loved this case. Missing diamonds, secret alliances, stolen identites, lots of secrets before Mr. Quayle unravels it. 3.66 This cozy mystery hybrid is particularly charming and satisfying for a murder mystery. She is turning 18, and he has summoned the whole family to attend the party because he has plans for a big announcement; however, before he can make it, he is brought word that the body of a young woman has been found on the castle grounds. He asks his new secretary, Mr. Quayle, to look into the matter alongside the police officer in charge of the case, Detective Inspector Wintle, with an eye to keeping the family out of the news as much as possible; he does not know that Mr. Quayle and DI Wintle know each other, having served together in the Great War under the command of the Earl’s late son. All seems to be in hand until a young gardener goes missing, and another body is found…. If you are a fan of the Golden Age of mystery writing, you will probably like this book: set in 1925, it has all the trimmings of those stories, including the titled (and entitled) family, the sweet ingenue, the semi-foppish but goodhearted nephew, a loyal and astute family retainer, and a family secret that brings out the covetous hearts of all involved. I very much enjoyed this novel, which is apparently the first in a series - despite the theme of murder, it’s very lighthearted and just a good bit of escapism; recommended! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
