Heenkomen is een boek waarvan ik erg heb genoten, om maar meteen met de deur in huis te vallen. Maar onder woorden brengen wat het precies is dat mij zo raakte blijkt nog niet zo makkelijk. Want er zitten best wat minpunten aan het boek. Dat heeft te maken met de vertelvorm die Pankaj Mishra gekozen heeft, namelijk die van een roman. Die roman lijkt te dienen als kapstok om ideeën aan op te hangen, halve essays soms. Pankaj Mishra (1969) staat dan ook vooral bekend om zijn non-fictie en opinie-artikelen, die verschijnen in kranten en tijdschriften in India én daarbuiten.

Eerst maar even terug naar het boek. In Heenkomen vertelt Mishra het levensverhaal van Arun, geboren rond 1970, als zoon van een spoorwegarbeider in een klein stadje in centraal India. Dat doet hij in de vorm van een monoloog, met Arun als verteller. De monoloog is gericht aan zijn ex-vriendin. In de monoloog probeert Arun uit te leggen waarom hij niet bij haar kon blijven, en die uitleg haalt hij uit zijn levensverhaal.

Arun is een jongen die kansen heeft gekregen in zijn leven. Zijn familie brengt grote offers om hem toegelaten te krijgen tot een prestigieuze opleiding in Delhi, de toegangspoort tot rijkdom en beroemdheid. Zijn studiegenoten Virendra en Aseem, ook van nederige afkomst, gaan er na hun afstuderen helemaal voor. De één stort zich in de de beurswereld in New York en verdient daar miljarden, de ander wordt een bekende televisiepersoonlijkheid en schrijver. Beiden zijn compromisloos in hun hang naar rijkdom en roem. Onethisch zou je kunnen zeggen, maar dit is waar ze hun hele jonge leven voor klaargestoomd zijn: pakken wat je pakken kan. Dat geldt uiteindelijk ook voor Arun. Ook al kiest hij voor een bescheiden carrière als vertaler, egocentrisme is ook hem niet vreemd. Iets terugdoen voor de familieleden die zulke grote offers voor hem brachten lukt hem niet, en over de keuze tussen een luxe strandvakantie met zijn nieuwe vriendin en zijn oude moeder verzorgen hoeft hij niet lang na te denken.

Er zitten best wat minpunten aan dit boek, zeker als roman. Je kan je afvragen waarom nou net Arun het centrale personage is. De onbeschaamde honger naar roem en rijkdom van zijn oud-studiegenoten blijft wat op afstand, want zoveel contact houdt hij niet met ze. Ook de liefde tussen Arun en een jonge sociale media-verslaafde rijke (en enorm knappe) vrouw komt wat onwaarschijnlijk over. Ik kan me voorstellen dat lezers die een roman verwachten daarop afknappen. Toch heb ik het boek met grote fascinatie uitgelezen, vooral toen ik eenmaal had besloten het meer als non-fictie te benaderen.

Het boek zit namelijk vol met interessante beschouwingen over de moderne Indiase maatschappij en de intolerante Hindoe-nationalistische politiek van president Modi. Tegelijk gaat het óók over de geglobaliseerde wereld waarin wij allemaal leven. Hij schrijft over Wall Street in de jaren ‘90, de wereldwijde kloof tussen arm en rijk, de opkomst van sociale media en populistische politici. Misschien is er niet zoveel verschil tussen wat er in India gebeurt en wat er op andere plekken in de wereld aan de hand is. Tegelijk houdt hij degenen die in welvaart leven een spiegel voor. Want op Twitter de mond vol hebben van gelijkheid is één ding; hoe ga je om met daadwerkelijke armoede, als je die tegenkomt? Dit boek raakt een snaar bij mij, omdat het de wereld beschrijft waarin ik ben opgegroeid en ik die wereld een beetje anders ben gaan bekijken. En omdat Mishra ook mij een confronterende spiegel heeft voorgehouden en me veel heeft gegeven om verder over na te denken. ( )

Beautiful writing - although I did have to keep my phone next to me looking up all the Indian terms and references to food, dress, caste, etc. The story is narrated by a young man, Arun, born at a low caste, who has managed to excel and though the sacrifices of his parents, enter IIT, the top Indian technology institute. Here he meets two other young men, Aseem and Virenda, also from the lower castes. The boys undergo horrible hazing but graduate with high hopes and ambitions. Aseem becomes a world wise publicist and the other a Wall Street player who eventually winds up in prison due to fraud.

Arun as narrator is telling his life story and relationship to the other two to a former lover, a beautiful young cosmopolitan Muslim woman. Unlike the other two, after graduation, Arun takes translation jobs eventually taking his mother to live with him in a remote mountainous part of northern India. It is here and through Aseem that he meets the young woman who becomes his lover. He basically abandons his mother during her last days as he travels with the woman to a luxury resort.

The story tells a lot about India and the caste system, the future of young Indians in the world, and the corruption of money and power. The writing is so beautifully written that I could easily envision the places that are so foreign to me. Loved the book in spite of having to consult the phone to explain some things. Great writer. He ends up as a translator living in Ranipur, in the Himalayas.

Another character is Alia, a female writer and influencer, who is piecing together the story of a global financial scandal, interviewing Arun and his friends.

What I particularly like about this book is the new insights into life in modern India for both the university educated and those that aren’t.
The book shows the effect of being a lower caste person on the attitudes to education and life in general.
The author uses the contrasts of these effects to show some extremes of behaviour and their results.
In a way the book also shows how difficult it is for anyone not of the most recent generation to fit into the modern world.

Pankaj Mishra is an experienced, accomplished author and this shows in this work.
I enjoyed this book more and more as the story progressed, with some surprises towards the end.
