Fantasy. Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:From the New York Times bestselling author of the Falling Kingdoms series comes the first book in a brand-new duology about forbidden magic and dangerous secrets, for readers of Victoria Aveyard and Margaret Rogerson.

Josslyn Drake knows only three things about magic: itâ??s rare, illegal, and always deadly.

So when sheâ??s caught up in a robbery gone wrong at the Queenâ??s Gala and infected by a dangerous piece of magicâ??one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlockâ??she finds herself living her worst nightmare. Joss needs the magic removed before it corrupts her soul and kills her. But in Ironport, the cost of doing magic is death, and seeking help might mean scheduling her own execution. Thereâ??s nobody she can trust.

Nobody, that is, except wanted criminal Jericho Nox, who offers her a deal: his help extracting the magic in exchange for the magic itself. And though sheâ??s not thrilled to be working with a thief, especially one as infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) as Jericho, Joss is desperate enough to accept.

But Jericho is nothing like Joss expects. The closer she grows to Jericho and the more she sees of the world outside her pampered life in the city, the more Joss begins to question the beliefs sheâ??s always taken for grantedâ??beliefs about right and wrong, about power and magic, and even about herself.

This book was a little slow at the beginning but the pace quickly picked up and the story became very interesting. I am looking forward to reading Legends and Liars to see how this story concludes. ( )

I had high hopes for this book, but it ended up just being okay for me. It started out slow, but it did pick up and got better at the end where there was a reveal.
This book has the trope about magic being forbidden. It's about Jossyln Drake and being the daughter of the former Prime Minister while she's at the Queen's Gala she finds herself in the middle of a robbery gone bad and gets infected with dangerous magic. This magic helps her tap into the memories of a evil and infamous warlock and she needs to get the magic removed but the penalty of doing magic is death and seeking help could get her the death penalty. There's no one she can go to for help except a wanted criminal, Jericho who wants the magic in exchange for helping her. She ends up finding a world outside of the rich world she's known with Jericho and she comes to have feelings for Jericho.
Jossyln ends up on an adventure with Jericho and she finds out there's a lot more to the world than she thought and that magic may not be as bad as she was told. There are some shocking twists and a big reveal at the end, which leaves you hanging on a major cliffhanger.
If you like the magic forbidden trope or this kind of story, then go ahead and check it out.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Penguin Young Readers Group for letting me read and review this interesting read. All opinions are my own. ( )

Delightfully dark and twisted which is my preferred theme these days. Yes, Joss is a bit narcissistic and couldn't keep a secret to save her soul, but she grows on you as does Jericho with his humor as dark as his fate, thanks to a very powerful witch. They head an interesting cast that moves through a complex plot filled with half-truths and surprises. I'll be quite eager to read the sequel. ( )
