This book is about a survival of a species in the far out Atlantic. It shows how the survival of the species is maintained through the intimate compromise of the Emperor Penguins selfless task of giving birth to the next generation of penguins. This story tells about the 80 mile trek, the switch off of the egg from male to female, tasks of getting food, and protection against the enemy; the sea lion.

I thought this story did an outstanding job of following the mating and birthing processes of the Emperor Penguins. I think that it may have been a little to mature for a younger audience, however for older children proves to be very informative and educational.

I would use this in my class as both a teaching tool for sciences and social studies. A study of the penguins habits and how life is continued in a different place in the world would help children understand the bigger world around them and of the differences in species and different parts of the world.
