A mesmerizing historical audiobook of suspense and intrigue about a teenage girl who risks everything to save her missing brother.
Poland, July 1944. Sixteen-year-old Maria is making her way home after years of forced labor in Nazi Germany, only to find her village destroyed and her parents killed in a war between the Polish Resistance and Ukrainian nationalists. To Maria's shock, the local Resistance unit is commanded by her older brother, Tomek??who she thought was dead. He is now a "Silent Unseen," a special-operations agent with an audacious plan to resist a new and even more dangerous enemy sweeping in from the East.
When Tomek disappears, Maria is determined to find him, but the only person who might be able to help is a young Ukrainian prisoner and the last person Maria trusts??even as she feels a growing connection to him that she can't resist.
Tightly woven, relentlessly intense, The Silent Unseen depicts an explosive entanglement of loyalty, lies, and love during wartime, from Amanda McCrina, the acclaimed author of Traitor, a debut hailed by Elizabeth Wein as "Alive with detail and vivid with insight . . . a piercing and bittersweet story."

After escaping from forced labor in Nazi Germany, Maria makes her way back home. Kostya flees for his life from the Ukrainian resistance after turning on his cousin. When resting in a loft, Nazi's bring in Kostya, shooting him in the knee. Maria shoots the Nazi's and the two flee. Maria reunites with her brother Tomek, a Polish resistance leader, and learns that the Ukrainian resistance slaughtered her village. The Polish resistance takes Kostya prisoner. Tomek travels to meet with the Ukrainian resistance in order to broker peace. When he does not return, Maria frees Kostya and forces him to help her.

This book felt like a young adult novel. The romance and plot was predictable. The characters were stereotypical and their interactions were one dimensional. Overall, 2 out of 5 stars. ( )

Title: The Silent Unseen: A Novel of World War Two
Author: Amanda McCrina
320 Pages
Published on April 5th 2022
Genre: Historical fiction

This book takes place in Poland in July of 1944 during World War Two. The main character Maria is on her way home after labor she was forced into in Nazi Germany only to find her parents deceased and village gone from the war. When her brother Tomek commander of the local Resistance unit disappears Maria is determined to find him.

This book had a slow start but I love Historical fiction especially World War Two novels so I decided to continue. I loved the plot of the story it's very interesting and felt so real. I love what you can learn from historical fiction novels too. It shows us how emotional and hard it was for the people living during this time. I will be honest that some parts were hard to follow listening to the audiobook though so if you plan to read this book I reccomend getting the physical copy. It didn't take away from the storyline though I still loved it. Finally, I would definitely reccomend reading this emotional book if you love Historical fiction and love novels about World War Two. The Silent Unseen will take you on Maria’s emotional journey brimming with grief, loss, pain, resilient, hope and fear…
Maria returned to her hometown after two years of being kept as slaves in German, only to discover that everything was gone.. While she was mourning her loss, she crossed path with Katya, who unexpectedly changed her course of her destiny. In addition, to her great surprise, she reunited with her brother, Tomek, whom she thought that he’s dead years ago. But Tomek turned out to be a different person now…
Would this reunion a blissful event or endanger Maria’s life?
THE SILENT UNSEEN is definitely a gripping and haunting WW-II historical thriller that you wouldn't want to miss out!

This is a compelling, young adult story set in Poland towards the end of World War II (though it feels current). Our 2 young protagonists are Polish Maria (who escaped from a work camp) and Kostya, who is part of the Ukrainian resistance. Our story is told in first (Maria) or third (Kostya) person, switching every between them every few chapters. Our 2 main characters are both war victims, but not on the same side. However, there is no “good guy/bad guy” here. Everyone suffers. And their hardship has stripped away nearly all of their humanity, leaving them cold, hardened killers. But this they have in common, and they manage to connect on this basic level to care for one another, recognizing that underneath the animalistic exterior, they are both desperate, vulnerable and scared.
At times, the story is a little confusing about who is who in regards to warring factions, but an appendix (which I found too late) at the back of the book can help with this. The book feels very raw with emotion and the characters are written well. So the book had all the ingredients for me to love it, but I didn’t. I only liked it.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the complimentary copy of this book; my review is an honest one. ( )
