For those who were Duranies as teens, this book is a nice walk down memory lane. It does expose some of the hidden flaws they had ( John’s self destructive behavior for one) but when we view the band with an adult, less idolizing lens, they are no shocks there.
The bulk of the book covers their meeting and formation until after their third album, the rest of their story is condensed into the last 75 pages or so. I had no problem with this, as it coincided with the years I was a fan, and I imagine this will be the sentiment of most readers.
The authors research came from interviews for a tentative autobiography of the band which never came to pass. The author fleshed it out with info from other sources and bios. ( )
I hope that this imperfect book does not serve as the definitive biography of Duran Duran, because it could have been so much better. A significant portion of this new work draws on past publications, by Andy Taylor, John Taylor, and Nile Rodgers. The writing often devolves into a dry recital of facts (where did the band's tour travel next, which band member dated which model or socialite) when a deeper analysis or high level overview would have added more value. There is no discussion of Duran Duran's (positive or negative) influence on later musicians, which would have been worthwhile to situate the band in the context of popular British music. Recommended only for Duran Duran fans (who are likely to have read the memoirs by John and Andy already). ( )
