The morning sun burned through the windows, blotting up the coolness which night had left in the corners of the room. The slave girl Hagar, who had been routed out of bed at dawn to minister to the young woman who had returned from the Pharaoh's rooms, was aware of the heat as though ut were a threat. Even here in the women's quarters where the walls were thick and shadowed by tamarisk trees, the air was oppressive.

Huddled alone in the dark wilderness, she was hearing the Voice again, hearing with the clarity with which Abram must have hear. "What about this child, Lord?" she begged. The Voice answered, "Behold, you are with child, and you will bear a son." Hagar's heart leaped. A son. Not a daughter who would be only a disappointment, but a son. "You shall call him Ishamel," the Voice went on, "because the Lord has given heed to your affliction."
