A secret crush leads to a not-so-secret romance in this delightful romantic comedy from Kris Ripper
There are three things you need to know about Preston "PK" Harrington the third:
  • He's a writer, toiling in obscurity as an editorial assistant at a New York City publishing house.
  • He is not a cliché. No, really.
  • He's been secretly in love with his best friend, Art, since they once drunkenly kissed in college.
  • When Art moves in with PK following a bad breakup, PK hopes this will be the moment when Art finally sees him as more than a friend. But Art seems to laugh off the very idea of them in a relationship, so PK returns to his writing roots??in fiction, he can say all the things he can't say out loud.
In his book, PK can be the perfect boyfriend.
Before long, it seems like the whole world has a crush on the fictionalized version of him, including Art, who has no idea that the hot new book everyone's talking about is PK's story. But when his brilliant plan to win Art over backfires, PK might lose not just his fantasy book boyfriend, but his best friend.
Carina Adores is home to romantic love stories where LGBTQ+ characters find their happily-ever-afters.

When PK's BFF Art turns up on his doorstep having broken up with his boyfriend, PK is unable to declare his true feelings but instead pours them into a romance novel, which looks like being a bestseller.

PK as narrator was irritating enough in the early parts for me to nearly DNF the book. It was only when we got into the mechanics of book production and the build up to publication that I found it interesting enough to keep me going through a romance which was less than compelling because I had absolutely no investment in the characters. on a different day i very well might have found this writing style annoying, but today i thought this tone and voice was great (and helped by the narration in the audio book) and humorous. maybe a little over the top at times, and definitely an impressive lack of ability to communicate that felt maybe too much at times. but still, today i really liked this. i especially liked all the publishing talk (even though the reality of writing an unfinished manuscript, selling it in a day, finishing the draft a couple of months later, having a book club discussing your book before it's even released, and having finished copies in people's hands 5 months after that is too fantastical for words) and bookish stuff. i know not all readers like reading about writers, but i almost always do. i also really liked the side characters wade and rae. Took a while to get into it, mainly because the MC is so frustrating and we're only getting his voice. But when the crap hit the fan, the story settled into a lovely rhythm. ( )

This is realistic in its pace, but the result is it's strangely static, going nowhere. Yet it is a long audiobook - 8 hours apparently - it seemed much longer!

I like the narrator a lot - Pete Cross - who delivers the first person narration for PK Kingsley.

But I'm half way through and it seems to be just a stream of consciousness about his longing for a romantic relationship with his best friend, Art.

Sept 2023 - I need to give this book another try since Alexis Hall names Kris Ripper as a favorite writer. ( )

A delightful one-sitting read with a happy ending for a protagonist with no idea how to express his feelings or make a move, except to let them boil over in a great dramatic plume of poor judgment. Everyone is imperfect but kind hearted and has understandable motivations. The main character is inept, as I said, and the beginning of the book is strongly flavored with his halting communication style, but this calms down later and he becomes very endearing even as he makes colossal mistakes. I was pulling for them by the end. ( )
