The request was a first for Eli Marks: "Can you help me make my tuba disappear?" Magician (and magic shop owner) Eli Marks is confronted with this odd demand just before he is about to close up shop for the day. Over the next few tense minutes, he finds a solution to that question which also, fortunately, puts him the positive side of what turns out to be a life-or-death situation. There’s one customer in Chicago Magic until a young boy walks in looking for a way to make his tuba disappear before tomorrow’s school talent show.
As Eli Marks helps the young boy, the customer stands and observes. Deciding to get involved, the customer asks some questions and tells some jokes from Eli’s grandfather’s magic book.
Will they solve the young boy’s tuba problem? And just who is the other customer?
=========
This short story, designed to introduce the setting and the main character for the Eli Marks series, looks at magic and its influence. The plot is interesting; the solution to the child’s problem both surprising and ingenious.
Readers are sure to find themselves drawn to the boy’s dilemma and will appreciate Eli’s solution. The unfolding story keeps the readers involved and leads to a completely unexpected denouement.
An excerpt from “The Ambitious Card” is also included.
