Bump by Matt Wallace is a 2022 Lone Star novel.

MJ feels lonely because she's alone a lot and she doesn't have any friends. Her dad is gone and mom has to work two jobs. She quits gymnastics even though she's good at it because the girls are mean, especially one. It's only when she accidentally meets her new next door neighbor that MJ's life completely changes. Mr. Arellano runs a professional wrestling school, and MJ LOVES wrestling. She used to watch it with her dad. She begs Mr. Arellano to let her train to be a professional wrestler. He reveals that she is too young at the age of twelve. She persists. After obtaining her mother's permission, MJ joins the club.

Life gets better and more complicated. MJ absolutely loves the wrestling school. The people there treat her with respect and are willing to teach and train her despite her age. She's pretty good at it. There's one strange thing happening. The state inspector hates wrestling and comes by weekly to fine the club in hopes of closing it down. MJ can't bear the thought of the school closing.

I don't think I'm successfully selling this book, but I really enjoyed listening to it. I very much recommend it--it has a nice pace and I like all of the characters. I hate the cover. I mean, it's cute, but it makes the book look like it'll be an elementary novel. The middle schoolers will love it--if I can get them to ignore the cover. I thoroughly enjoyed it. ( )
