  • New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Megan Abbott's exquisite and disquieting new novel, ??dark and juicy and tinged with horror? (The New York Times Books Review), set against the hothouse of a family-run ballet studio.
With their long necks and matching buns and pink tights, Dara and Marie Durant have been dancers since they can remember. Growing up, they were homeschooled and trained by their glamorous mother, founder of the Durant School of Dance. After their parents' death in a tragic accident nearly a dozen years ago, the sisters began running the school together, along with Charlie, Dara's husband and once their mother's prized student.

Marie, warm and soft, teaches the younger students; Dara, with her precision, trains the older ones; and Charlie, sidelined from dancing after years of injuries, rules over the back office. Circling around one another, the three have perfected a dance, six days a week, that keeps the studio thriving. About halfway through this book, I contemplated not finishing it. The pace had slowed and there wasn't a lot happening. The second half picked up and had a lot of twists and turns that I did not anticipate. I liked the ending and I am glad I did not give up on the story. ( )

Bleh! Checked this out totally at random, definitely not the target audience ( )

I watched a few ballet documentaries lately so I thought this book would be perfect for me but this was filled with creepy / inappropriate behavior by all adults and populated by totally unlikeable characters.

I will say the author built a strong atmosphere around this family and ballet school but who would want to feel this way?

Oh my! Simply put this has been the most torturous book I’ve read all year. It didn’t have a complete plot and I just felt like I was in the twilight zone reading this the entire time. I was hoping for this big revealing ending, but nope nada, it just left me more confused.
I enjoy this authors other books but this was a total miss for me. ( )

This book was just creepy. It is about a ballet family and has a LOT of sexual activity (masturbation, incest, child abuse). It felt icky to read. There is also a bit of a mystery/thriller element to it when there is a death.
I couldn't wait for this to be over. ( )
