This audio book is all about the acting and sound design. The story is simple and charming, the characters colorful and silly, but it all comes alive with the full cast recording. My son is a fan, as am I. This lovely little audio drama is worth a few hours listen. ( )

The Flying Flamingo Sisters
by Carrie Seim and narrated by a variety of actors
This was quite a strange little story that young girls would probably like a lot more than I did. Three young girls to middle grade (?) are part of a family of pilots during a time of the depression. The parents are off on a flight when they go missing. Their sly and greedy Uncle that their parents don't even like shows up and wants all the girls stuff and a treasure map. The girls take off to find their parents and this book is their story. Ends in a cliffhanger.
The story is definitely made for younger listeners. The multiple performers were very good for a kids book. ( )

A Depression-era kids' wild romp in the sky.

When their aviator parents take off on a record-setting expedition, and then disappear over the Pacific, the Flamingo sisters--Flo, Faye, and Franny, ranging from 16 down to 9--have very little time to be worried before their Evil Uncle Freidrich swoops in to inform them he's now in charge. And girls can't fly airplanes, or aeroplanes, so he's taking possession of the girls' biplane. Oh, and they need to hand over the map to the Flamingo family treasure, immediately.

He is not impressed by their entirely honest denial of any knowledge of either the map or the treasure.

They cleverly escape him, and wind up joining a flying circus, headed west to California. They perform amazing stunts of derring-do, and in the meantime need to find the map, break a secret code, and do battle with Freidrich several more times, while searching for their missing parents.

I'd say they match wits with Freidrich, but really, Freidrich is unarmed in that contest. They're much smarter.

There is a dog, who gets very few lines, really, it's shocking, but the dog does survive, which is the most important thing.

The whole thing is very silly, and a lot of fun if you remember not to take any of it seriously.

I got this audiobook through the Audible Originals program, and am reviewing it voluntarily. ( )

Good Time Cartoony Fun
Review of the Audible Original audiobook edition (Dec. 12, 2019

This reminded a lot of the old time cartoons Rocky & Bullwinkle and Dudley Do-Right. That was primarily because the menacing Uncle Friedrich character was reminiscent of the Snidely Whiplash villain in the Dudley Do-Right cartoons. The whole narration with footnote interjections was also a regular feature in those cartoons. Anyway, it brought back fond memories. Younger listeners may find it similar to A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'd say this would very entertaining for both younger children and adults.

The narration performances by author Carrie Seim and several others in the extended cast were all excellent.

The Flying Flamingo Sisters was originally released December 12, 2019. It was a free Audible Original for members in the month of May 2020. It is available to everyone for a standard price. ( )
